Summer Running 2010

Hi Everyone,

Remember that we begin running on June 21 - this upcoming Monday morning. We have two groups. A 6:15am group that is mostly made up of some of the girls on the team who have jobs. These athletes should be able to handle 7-8 minute pace. This is not a beginner group.

The second group will meet at 8am.

Practice will last between 45 minutes for beginners to 2 hours for veterans.

On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday we will meet at Independence Park also known as Kellman Fields on Holmes Blvd. On Tuesday and Thursday we will meet at Granada’s Snack Shack on the track at GHS.

If you haven’t yet done so, make an appointment for a physical. I believe that you can download the LVJUSD/GHS physical form from granadahigh.com. This will need to be completed in order to eligible in August. Don’t delay, especially if you have Kaiser as it can take two months to get an appointment.

GONG 5:14; SUMMERS QUALIFIES FOR FINALS

On the first hot track day of the year Maryann Gong showed how fearless she is by sticking with some of the top girls in NCS to run a 4 second PR in 5:14.77 for 1600m. Starting with league finals, Maryann has dropped her time in this event 11 seconds. Way to go!

Alex also raced the 1600m and qualified for finals with a 4:22.00. Alex will race the 1600 and 3200 final on Saturday. Carina Novell will also race the 3200 final at NCS MOC.

SUMMERS WINS 3200M TRI-VALLEY

Alex Summers had a great day during an afternoon that had terrible wind conditions. First he won his heat of the 1600m and placed second overall in 4:24. Then he came back a few hours later to win the 3200m with a blazing kick to open up 4 seconds on the rest of the field. He ran 9:44. The wind conditions were about the worst I ever seen for race day at GHS.

Carina Novell placed 8th overall in the 1600m in a time of 5:12. She then came back to take 7th and secure a spot to MOC in the 3200m (11:28). After deciding not to race the 1600m at MOC, this opened a spot for Granada’s 10th place finisher Maryann Gong who had a big PR in the 1600 to run 5:18.

SUMMERS EBAL CHAMP; NOVELL ALL-LEAGUE TWICE

It was a great day for track and field. Carina had an amazing race posting a 10 second personal record taking 3rd place for All-League honors. Her 5:09 1600m will have her challenging for a spot to NCS MOC at next week’s NCS Tri-Valley meet at Granada. She was able to come back two hours later and do it all over again, racing in the heat, and unleashing her incredible kick to take third place. It was her second personal record of the day in a time of 11:17.

Alex had a great day running a personal best in the 1600 and taking 3rd place at 4:20. This was a 6 second PR. Then in the 3200 he ran a spectacular race, stayed in the front group, and as most of the runners were fading, kept his composure and stayed with the two lead fresh runners. With 120m in the race he unleashed the fastest kick I have every seen him run putting nearly 3 seconds between himself and the others. This was Alex’s first league title! Congratulations!
